2nd-5th Grade Reading & Writing


Goals & Objectives

Lighthouse Christian School is committed to providing students an effective literacy program through a combination of strong phonetics, vocabulary, fluency, writing, speaking, and comprehension skills. In the elementary grades, emphasis is placed on the following:

  • Daily practice with phonetic rules and word patterns
  • Strong sentence structure that promotes a foundation for paragraph development and formal writing
  • High standard of neatness is expected in both print and cursive writing
  • A combination of oral reading and silent reading
  • Guided reading in small groups that target specific needs
  • Comprehension activities that develop critical thinking skills focused on important story elements such as main characters, setting, problem/solution, main ideas, cause/effect, visualization, inferring, etc.
  • Teacher read-aloud sessions that model fluency (voice/expression, rate) and encourage vocabulary
  • Opportunities to combine reading and writing creatively through hands-on projects, student-published books, creative representations, and oral presentations linked to science and social studies lessons
  • Teachers use a wide variety of children’s literature including picture books and chapter books/novels as a springboard for learning effective writing skills such as alliteration, personification, hyperbole, similes, and onomatopoeia
  • Students are exposed to multiple genres including fiction/fantasy, nonfiction, poetry, and folktales/fables
  • An appreciation of books, reading, and writing
